Wheel-Thrown Pumpkin Workshop

Learn how to create a one-of-a-kind ceramic pumpkin using a closed wheel-thrown form!

In this workshop, we’ll demonstrate how to throw and close a hollow form on the pottery wheel, then shape and alter it to create a rounded pumpkin. You’ll learn how to control the clay as the opening becomes smaller, fully close the form, define the pumpkin’s sections, and add a handmade stem.

This project is a fun introduction to closed forms and altering wheel-thrown pottery. These techniques can also be applied to future sculptural projects, including gourds, ornaments, enclosed vessels, and other decorative forms.

Prerequisite: This is not a learn-to-throw class. Participants must be comfortable centering clay and throwing basic forms independently. This workshop is designed for students who have completed our six-week Beginner Wheel Class or have equivalent wheel-throwing experience.

Clay and the bisque firing of one finished wheel-thrown pumpkin are included in the class price. If you create additional pieces, you may choose to keep and fire them for an additional fee.

Trimming is not included in this workshop. Participants will need to return after their pumpkin has reached the leather-hard stage to trim and finish their piece. You may book an available Wheel Time session or attend through your Mud Club membership. 

After trimming, finished pumpkins will be bisque fired and ready approximately 2–3 weeks later.

Glazing is not included. Participants may return during an available open-studio session to glaze their pumpkin by paying the $8 studio fee.

BYOB: Feel free to bring your favorite beverage to enjoy while you create. Adult beverages are welcome for guests 21+ with a valid ID.
